SAPOL appreciates country hospitality

Community members living in the vicinity of the tiny town of Wrattonbully have been presented with Certificates of Appreciation by South Australia Police (SAPOL).

The certificates acknowledge their support and assistance to officers stationed on a border checkpoint during COVID-19.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a border checkpoint was established at Site 44 on Edenhope Road, Wrattonbully where police officers could ensure compliance of those entering and leaving the area.

Like many border checkpoints, there was a lack of infrastructure and conveniences in the surrounding area.

For those officers stationed at Site 44, there were some very cold and dark nights which for many, made the feeling of being isolated and far from home even harder.

In response to this, a number of community members living near Site 44 assisted police officers and Australian Defence Force personnel at the border checkpoint by providing firewood, fire pits and “some of the best country baked goodies ever tasted” as described by officers in the area.

Operations Inspector of Limestone Coast Local Service Area Inspector Karmen Conway said this was a classic example of where police officers and the execution of their duties would be substantially more challenging if not for the unprompted support of local community members.

“The support and goodwill provided by these community members of Wrattonbully during the unprecedented time of the global pandemic brought cheer and comfort to officers at the Site 44 border checkpoint,” Inspector Conway said.

“Despite the challenges of COVID-19, it was humbling to experience the generosity and community spirit from those involved and the positive relationships that developed between our people and the local community.

“SAPOL thanks these community members for their kindness and hospitality which will long be remembered by those officers who had the privilege of being on the receiving end of this support.”
