Avariety of crowd-pleasing entertainment is anticipated to draw in a large gathering of showgoers to the 146th Millicent AH&P Show this weekend.

Among the line-up is the return of the speed shear that has been rescheduled to Friday night, along with the captivating fireworks display, and ever popular sideshow alley.

Show society vice president Colin Searle said setting up has been actively getting under way over the past couple of weeks.

“As soon as one show is over then planning for the next starts. Then as the year goes on it gets busier,” he said.

“The past two weeks we have had people at the showgrounds getting ready.

“We have people in the office taking entries for the indoor exhibits.

“Some show rides that were at the Mount Gambier show that did not go to the Penola show came straight to Millicent to set up.”

Mr Searle said iconic Millicent show events would return, alongside new attractions in the program.

The speed shear event was trialled for the first time on the Friday evening at last year’s show to account for the loss of the long-running Stadium Cross.

The same fate has occurred this year, with the motorcycle event unable to return.

The success of the restructure of the speed shear event last year will see it return bigger and better with the introduction of an ‘Iron Man Challenge’.

Though indoor judging will commence from 9am, the showground gates open on Friday at 12pm with indoor displays ready to view when the hall opens at 1pm.

Following the speed shear, local band Incarnation take to the stage covering pub favourites and songs from the 1970s and 80s.

The fireworks spectacle is scheduled to light up the night sky at 9pm.

Saturday begins early with yard dogs, however eager showgoers will have to wait until 9am when gates open to the public.

The day is guaranteed to be action packed with regular amusements and attractions including sideshow alley, horses in action, as well as cattle, sheep, poultry and pigeon competitions.

Animal lovers will be in their element with the interactive animal nursery which this year features native animals’ courtesy of Bush Buddies from Penola.

Indoor exhibitions will again be on display, ranging from arts and crafts, cooking, flowers, metalwork and woodwork, as well as student work from schools and preschools around the local district.

Vera’s Kitchen will be open to tempt the tastebuds and is sure to satisfy hungry bellies.

Newborns to youth aged 15 years are invited to be signed up for the showperson competition, with participants to sign on at the outdoor stage before 11am ready for judging at 11.15am.

Take a wander outside to view unique vehicles and stationary engines, have a ride on Rob’s Carriages, cheer on the lawn mower racing, before the day comes to an end with the grand parade and demolition derby.

Hosted by show patrons, the Garner Family, is the ever-popular smash and crash car amusement bringing the show weekend to a close.

Sunday is a low-key day of horses in action and a morning market.
