Sinkhole opens near city railway lands

Heavy rain has led to a sizeable sinkhole opening in the heart of Mount Gambier.

A portion of the ground in the walkway between Margaret Street and the Railway Lands has opened up following heavy rain in recent days.

A council spokesperson said preliminary investigation suggested that it was a naturally occurring sinkhole.

“Further investigation is required and will be undertaken when it is safe to do so,” the spokesperson said.

“With more rain on the way, council is monitoring the site and has extended the barrier surrounding the hole.

“Please stay away from the area.”
