April is National Greyhound Adoption Month, a time to celebrate these affectionate dogs and raise awareness about their potential as family pets. One such success story is Sophie, a retired racing greyhound who found her forever home after a short but swift career.
Before she was Sophie, she raced as ‘Aston Fiona’ at Mount Gambier Racetrack.
Trained by David Peckham and Christine Yourgules, she had just 21 starts before retiring.
That chapter led her to Deidre, who had long admired greyhounds after meeting them at the Greyhounds As Pets SA (GAP SA) stand at the Royal Adelaide Show.
In March 2025, Deidre decided it was time to welcome a greyhound into her home.
Since she already had two small dogs—a Cavalier and a Toy Poodle—she began by fostering Sophie through GAP SA.
With their support, the transition was seamless, and within two weeks, Sophie became a permanent family member.
The three dogs bonded instantly, enjoying daily walks and adventures together.
Deidre’s two-year-old grandson also quickly warmed to Sophie, though he was not pleased when she snuck a piece of his toast! Despite her cheeky side, Sophie is adored for her gentle and loving nature.
She proves greyhounds can thrive with small animals and young children, debunking common misconceptions.
Sophie’s story highlights the joy of greyhound adoption.
These loving dogs make wonderful family companions, offering loyalty and affection.
If you’re considering fostering or adopting, now is the perfect time.
