South East dominates 8-ball carnival

The 32nd South Australian Women’s State Carnival 8-ball competition was held at Chalkers Eightball Centre in Glenelg recently and the Limestone Coast took it by storm winning for the first time.

The competition was made up of 23 teams from leagues around SA, including Sunraysia and Broken Hill, who were also affiliated, but the South East stole the show.

The South East Women’s 8-ball League had three teams attend the competition, led by team one which was made up of the five top players from last year’s local competition stats.

Chris Schembri led the unit as captain and enjoyed strong support from Mandy Hart, Jo Walsh, Toni Greenwood and Karla Bowd.

The South East’s campaign started strong with an 11-4 win over City of Adelaide, before a pair of 9-6 triumphs over Broken Hill and Mannum.

The team continued the good form by beating both Central’s and Sunraysia 11-4.

Respective 12-3 and 9-6 wins over SA women’s and Great Southern ensured the Limestone Coast based team finished the minor rounds undefeated.

Monday was finals day where the South East smashed Gawler 8-2 to keep up the good form.

But just when the team’s confidence was sky high after a dream couple of days, the South East had to fight hard against SA Women’s 1.

At one stage things were looking desperate for the Limestone Coast crew trailing 7-4, but they bounced back big time.

Schembri guided her side to win the last four games to steal a stunning grand-final berth 8-7.

It set up a date with Sunraysia in the decider where the South East pulled out all the shots.

Nothing was going to stop Schembri and her team from going all the way.

They cruised to an 8-4 victory – the first time the South East Women’s 8-ball League won the competition after many years of being the runners-up.

Now the South East is the undefeated 2022 South Australian Women’s 8-ball State Champions.
