Special guests nominated for milestone

Sporting stars and ex-locals Natalie Medhurst and Grant Mitton have been nominated to be the guests-of-honour at the celebrations in November to mark Millicent’s 150th birthday.

Both spent their formative years in Millicent and later represented Australia in their sports.

Ms Medhurst played in the national netball team while Mr Mitton played hockey at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.

The nominations were made at the August monthly meeting of Wattle Range Council.

Councillor Peter Dunnicliff supported an invitation to the champion netballer while Cr Sharon Cox backed the hockey player.

Cr John Drew suggested the invitation list not be restricted to ex-local sporting champions but also those with successful careers.

Council is arranging the 150th birthday celebrations for Millicent and the August meeting increased the budget to $20,000.

The weekend of November 20-22 will be crammed with events to mark the milestone.

While yet to be confirmed, the highlight appears to be a paid and ticketed concert by former Southend resident Kasey Chambers.

The annual Wattle Range Art Show will be launched while it is hoped musicians from the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra will perform at Millicent’s two aged care facilities.

The annual Amazing Race around different parts of Millicent will be a fundraiser for the Wattle Range Suicide Prevention Group.

The Longest Table Lunch in The Domain will celebrate the local produce of Millicent and surrounds with live music and it will potentially be a fundraiser for a local charity organisation.

The 150th Stories Book Launch and Time Capsule opening will be staged. A Twilight Market in the Domain will have local produce, products, arts and crafts and Coonawarra wines.

An Art Attack George Glass event will incorporate live music and audience participation while The Millicent National Trust Museum will host its annual open day.
