Speedway season fit for a king

Race fans only have to wait one more week for Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway to rev back to life with the sound of roaring engines.

Borderline Speedway released its jam-packed calendar for the 2021-22 season and there is no messing around as sprintcars prepare to hit the dirt next weekend.

The green flag drops with the opening round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Sprintcar Series alongside the SA Formula 500 State Series and MJ’s Street Stock Series.

It has not been a simple process putting the calendar together with organisers making numerous changes to be flexible with the ever-fluctuating COVID-19 environment which only firmed weeks away from the opening night.

Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said he could not wait to see sprintcars grace the bullring once again and was hopeful many Victorian drivers would make a long-awaited return after almost two years in the cold due to COVID-19.

“The biggest issue we had was when the government announced the borders were going to open on the 23rd (of November), which meant we can go back to plans we had earlier in the year,” he said.

“We signed a contract with the Victorian Eureka and Sheds Sprintcar Series, so we needed to honour that and it will happen.

“We should fill our pits up with numerous cars from South Australian and Victoria, which is excellent.

The first of five state titles on the line follows on Saturday, December 11 where the SA Wingless Sprints will fight for the grand prize, an event that has been boosted by the addition of Victorian drivers.

The week of the Boxing Day Test in Mount Gambier means one thing for motorsport fans and that is sprintcars at Borderline.

Usually, fans pack the hill looking to catch a glimpse of the World Series Spintcars, but for a second straight season the grand competition has been parked.

However, the final Tuesday night of 2021 will still be brought to life with sprintcar action when the second of four SA/Vic Speedweek rounds is scheduled.

Although the WSS title is missing, there is plenty on the line with a $20,000 prize pool up for grabs as the series sweeps across Murray Bridge, Avalon, Mount Gambier and Warrnambool.

Super Sedans, Modlites and Street Stocks are also listed to entertain the big crowd on the night.

“World Series Sprintcars wont be holding the series again this year because they were not confident about the COVID-19 situation,” Jennings said.

“So now Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge, Avalon and Warrnambool will have a sprintcar week across four nights which should attract a lot of cars.

“Hopefully we will see some drivers venture down from New South Wales and Queensland.”

The big meetings keep coming thick and fast in the new year, with a triple header opening 2022.

The SA Speedcar title is on the line plus Wingless Sprints and a Formula 500 Dash for Cash.

Borderline’s trademark event – the King’s Challenge – will complete January where Junior Sedans and Wingless Sprints are the support act.

Jennings hopes the signature race returns to its former glory.

“We are starting to get back to normal where we were a few years ago,” he said.

“Hopefully we do not have any more COVID lockdowns, so our Victorian neighbors can come and race.”

Following a month’s rest, the raceway welcomes an old friend back to its dirt.

Across the final weekend of February speedway go karts will tackle the bullring and race for a national title.

Jennings said the Australian Speedway Karts title will be a great spectacle.

“We have been asked to host the Australian Speedway Karts Association Australian title which will be a first for us,” he said.

“We have not had go karts for 15 to 20 years and there will be 10 different classes running for the championship.”

One week later the All Stars 360 Sprintcars take centre-stage alongside the SA Modlites title and the return of classic modified sedans.

The final SA #1 plate to be decided at Borderline is the Super Sedans State title to be held on the first weekend of April which is supported by the SA F500 State Series, Street Stocks and Junior Sedans.

There will be big interested in the latter category with the Australian Junior Sedans Championship mooted to be held at Mount Gambier in 2023.

The season will finish in the usual flourish with fireworks, chocolate and sprintcars at the annual Easter Sprintcar Trail.
