Allendale East Area School students, staff and volunteers held a successful biggest morning tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council of SA, with more than 60 people attending.
A total of $1286 was raised through door entry and raffles.
Students from Years 4-7 waited on tables, sold raffle tickets and helped to cook and prepare cakes, slices, sandwiches and savouries.
Many guests commented on the young people and were extremely impressed with the way the students presented themselves and their impeccable manners.
Guests Jean Kerslake and Carol Taylor commented on how proud the school should be of the students.
“It is great they get the opportunity to participate, socialise and work with adults.
“It is also good for their confidence and socialising,” they said.
It is only the second time the school has run the event and a school spokesperson said it was hoped to run it again in 2024.
Year 6 student Evie Jones, 11, gave an opening speech on behalf of Principal Kylie Smith who was unable to attend.
“I am filled with gratitude and excitement to welcome each and every one of you to this special occasion, the Cancer Council’s biggest morning tea,” the youngster said.
“It is an honour to have the opportunity to address such a group of dedicated individuals who have come together to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.”
Evie said the school firmly believed that education extends beyond the walls of the classroom.
“It includes the values of empathy and community involvement.
“Today’s event illustrates our commitment to communicating these values in the hearts and minds of our students and community,” she said.
“It is an act of compassion and support for those who have faced the difficult journey of cancer.
“Together, we are raising funds that contribute to vital cancer research, support services, prevention programs and patient care.
“We are making a difference in the lives of individuals and families, providing them with hope, strength and resources to fight against this challenging disease.”
Evie also thanked the Cancer Council, the event organisers and the volunteers who gave their time and effort to make the morning tea a reality.
