Students entertain on the big stage

McDonald Park Primary School has taken to the stage with its biannual musical despite COVID restrictions.

Deputy principal Sharon Day said this year’s musical was based on a book from Craig Hawes and is a Star Wars parody titled Star Warts: The Empire Strikes Back.

“The whole school is involved over three nights with Year 6 and 7’s given the opportunity to audition for the main parts,” she said.

“Each class performs one song so they come onto the stage for the song items, but the main characters stay on stage for the whole performance across all three nights.”

Mrs Day said while the musical was usually performed at The Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, this year it was held in the school gym due to COVID restrictions.

“We did not want the location to ruin the big stage experience, so we tried to make the musical as professional as possible,” Mrs Day said.

“We got advice from parents involved in the performing arts industry about staging it in our venue and hired lighting and sound equipment.

“We used our staging that we have at school and a massive black curtain as a backdrop that went from one side of the stage to the other.

“The students did a brilliant job and the dancing was excellent.

“I want to thank our staff who really smashed it out to create a great event.”
