The super-sized white hand sculpture which was installed last week at The Domain in Millicent is generating plenty of interest.
Known officially as the Millicent Entry Marker, the lion’s share of the $153,000 construction and installation costs have been met by a Federal Government grant, with the balance coming from Wattle Range Council.
Footpaths, lighting and landscaping form part of the project which is near the intersection of Williams Road and Ridge Terrace.
The floodlighting has yet to be activated.
The original site was 100 metres to the south near North Terrace but the council had a change of heart earlier this year.
The super-sized white hand sculpture won the popular vote in a survey conducted in 2019 and finished ahead of three other possible designs.
There has been a mixed response from the public according to responses posted on the Facebook page of The SE Voice.
“I would have thought a giant toilet paper roll would be a better choice,” Jeanie said.
“Cannot see the relevance to the town,” Mandy said.
“That’s it!!!! OMG,” Louise said.
“Would be better to see another fuel station in town,” Peter said.
Wattle Range Council is planning an event later this year to highlight the completion of all the elements in The Domain precinct.
In a staff report to council, it was noted that council officers are actively seeking inputs from Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation in Mount Gambier regarding landscaping and an opening ceremony.
