Super Sunday takes to field

It was a special round in the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League as a super Sunday of footy action was held at Blue Lake Sports Park with four under 16 games played instead of the usual two.

Each side apart from Kyby Tigers and the North Tigers got the chance to play two matches on the day with the first bounce at 10am and games continuing throughout the day.

Hawks v Hatherleigh

The first match of super Sunday was a one sided affair as the top of the table Hatherleigh faced the bottom of the table Hawks.

The Hawks had hopes of pulling off a miracle and being the first team to beat the high flying Eagles this season but it was not to be as Hatherleigh had a destructive first quarter which set the tone for the match.

Hatherleigh booted six majors in the opening term to have a 39 point lead at quarter time.

The situation did not improve for the Hawks in the second quarter as it was more of the same from the Eagles.

While Hatherleigh was not as damaging it still kicked three goals for the term to take its lead out to 61 points with the Hawks yet to score at the half time break.

The match was as good as done as the teams came out after three quarter time but the Hawks still gave their all against tough opposition.

Hatherleigh scored less freely now facing improved resistance from its opponents.

The Eagles only kicked two goals in the third quarter while holding the Hawks scoreless yet again.

Going into the final quarter the result was secured for Hatherleigh as it had a 12 goal lead, a deficit far too large to turn around in one term.

The Eagles kicked a further six goals to extend the lead to 115 points at the end of the match, delivering another dominant display. The Hawks remain without a win, with hopes they could turn their fortune around later when they faced the Kyby Tigers.

Best on ground for Hatherleigh was Hannah Bellinger, Sebella Coghlan, Kalli Nettle, Amber Chester and Emily Denton, while the standouts in a difficult match for the Hawks were Havana Beard, Sophie Longbottom, Lacey Hannaford, Vespa Scott, Lily Milich and Indiana Scott.

Amber Chester was once again an unstoppable force in front of goals kicking nine goals, while Scarlett Zalme was also impressive with three goals of her own.

Demons v Tigers

Having only won the single game for the year the Demons knew they had a tough task against second placed Tigers even with the home ground advantage.

The match was a far more low scoring affair than previously as only one point was scored for the opening quarter as an even contest played out.

The Tigers started to get control of the midfield battle in the second quarter and managed to kick the first goal of the match and what would be the only goal of the first half.

While South was scoreless at half time the match was still very much in the balance as the Tigers only had a seven point lead.

South was hopeful it could start to take control of the match in the second half however the Tigers held strong as their defence dealt with any attacks.

The South defence was also performing well as it limited the good chances the Tigers created as North were only able to score two points for the quarter.

South still remained scoreless at three quarter time but only being nine points down the door of opportunity remained open for a comeback.

South finally got a point on the board however the Tigers midfield started to run over the opposition and kicked three goals for the quarter to put the game out of reach for the Demons.

The final siren blew with the Tigers taking the win over the Demons 4.4 (28) to 0.1 (1).

Standouts for the Demons were Ella Guest, Marnie Mueller, Farlie Rigopoulis and Emily Walker, while the best players for the Tigers were Raine Darimaani, Layla Sneath, Eadie Mustart, Becky Davis, Sailor McCracken and Charlie Blanck.

The goal scorers were Eadie Mustart, Sailor McCracken, McKayla Maney and Kelsie Anderson.

Kyby Tigers v Hawks

The third match of the Super Sunday action for round 7 offered up an absolute thriller as the match between the Kyby Tigers and the Hawks went down to the wire with the Hawks claiming their first win of the season.

Kyby started off well taking the lead early with a well worked team goal and then managed to keep the Hawks scoreless for the quarter.

The Hawks closed the gap in the second quarter with a goal of their own.

Kyby was missing its chances with two behinds for the quarter keeping the Hawks within striking distance.

Kyby had a two point lead at half time and the Hawks worked quickly to close the gap, managing to kick another goal to have the lead at the final break.

The Tigers were once again missing their chances as they needed to close the three point gap in the final term.

Kyby came out firing, applying plenty of pressure to the Hawks defence but it stood strong.

The Hawks missed their chance to bury the game leaving Kyby with a chance.

In the final moments Kyby ran towards goal with an excellent chance, however the kick went through the behinds and a quick kick out down the line was enough to secure a thrilling two point win for the Hawks.

Missed opportunities cost Kyby the match as the final score finished 1.6 (12) to the Hawks 2.2 (14).

The stars of the day for the Hawks were Aynslee Hayman, Ruby Milich, Lacey Hannaford, Addison Graney and Cedar Scott, with Lily Jacob and Abby Brant scoring the winning goals.

Kyby’s best on a tough day were Evie Mott, Piper Wardle, Alice McKenzie, Chloe Crouch, Isabelle Harrison and Ivy Wurst.

Hatherleigh v Demons

The final match of the day saw the undefeated Hatherleigh taking on fourth placed Demons.

It was business as usual for the Eagles as they opened the match with two first quarter goals and kept the home side scoreless.

The Demons needed to respond quickly to Hatherleigh, however the Eagles piled on the pressure in the second quarter and did some real damage on the scoreboard.

At half time the Demons were six goals behind with a big mountain to climb to get back into the match.

Hatherleigh was determined to not give its opposition a chance, kicking three more goals in the third quarter to extend its lead to 58 points at three quarter time.

Once again Hatherleigh successfully kept its opponent scoreless for the match as it closed out the game with a relentless quarter.

The Demons defence stood up despite the tough situation and held the Eagles goalless in the final term. The final score was Hatherleigh 8.10 (58) to the Demons 0.0 (0).

Amber Chester was once again a danger in front of goal with three majors.

Best for Hatherleigh were Chloe Bellinger, Asha Gysbers, Lucy Crowe, Scarlett Zalme and Kalli Nettle, while Demons standouts were Ella Guest, Isabella Morello, Marnie Mueller and Millie Matthews.
