Teams strengthen grip

The Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association season completed its third round last weekend and the top teams jumped clear of their rivals.

Glencoe Gold appears to be the outfit to catch in Division 2 after a strong win away from home over Reidy Park.

The home side was never in the contest after Glencoe Gold asserted its authority by winning the opening four sets.

Tess Kenseley was the only victorious Reidy Park player as the visitors cleaned up every doubles encounter with Mark Feetom, Sam Auld, David Cole, Cassie Edwards and Alison Auld all undefeated.

The 10-set win puts Glencoe Gold one round clear of the rest of the competition at the top of the ladder and a lot of the credit can also go to its sister team.

Glencoe Maroon entered its clash with a confident Mount Schank side on the back foot, but produced a stunning comeback to steal the points.

Only Craig Childs could snatch a singles win for the Glencoe team as Mount Schank won six of the first seven sets on offer.

However, Mount Schank stumbled in the doubles and Glencoe Maroon flew home to win the last five duels led by Childs, Alice Tentye and Cathy and Alison Meyer.

The fast finish levelled the scoreboard at six sets apiece and Glencoe Maroon edged ahead by just two games.

Mount Gambier claimed the honours in a hard-fought battle with Centrals.

Three consecutive singles’ wins to Jayel van den Hurk, Amelia Hancock and Stef Lopriore handed Mount Gambier the lead, but Centrals did not give up on its home court.

The doubles battles were shared evenly, but Mount Gambier held on to win by two sets.

Scores for the Suttontown Tigers v West Gambier Red and West Gambier Blue v Uniting Church contests were not available at the time of print.

Centrals/Uniting Church has taken control in Division 1 after a four-set win in its top-of-the-ladder clash with Glencoe, while West Gambier won by the same margin against Reidy Park.

All three senior divisions play on Saturday afternoon during Round 4.
