Theft claims spike

Insurance claims for stolen cars rose by almost 20% last financial year at RAA Insurance – and an Aussie icon is still top of crims’ most wanted list.

In the 2023-24 financial year, the number of car theft claims submitted to RAA Insurance was 18% above the year prior, and 23% up on two years ago.

The claims data shows the top five most commonly stolen vehicle types last year were Holden Commodore, Mazda 3, Toyota Landcruiser, Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla.

RAA Mobility Expert Mark Borlace said many instances of car theft involved keys being taken from inside the home.

“Car theft is a growing concern for motorists – as vehicles can be targeted by opportunists and organised crime gangs alike,” Mr Borlace said.

“We urge drivers not to be complacent with their vehicle security. In particular, make sure your car keys are stored in a secure location in your home and out of view, so if trespassers enter your house, they cannot easily find them.

“Wherever possible, park your vehicle in a secure garage with the doors locked and windows up.

“If you must park on the street, try to park in a well-lit area and do not leave valuable items or anything that identifies you in the car.”
RAA’s car security advice: park in a secure garage wherever possible; install sensor lights and/or cameras on your driveway; if you must park on the street, park in a well-lit area; always lock your vehicle; don’t leave valuable items or identifying documents in your car and store your keys in a secure location, out of view.
