Two Mount Gambier men have been arrested as police urge businesses to be extra vigilant against shoplifting in the lead up to Christmas.
About 4.45pm last Wednesday police arrested a 36-year-old local man in relation to recent thefts from stores in Mount Gambier.
He was charged with theft and unlawful possession and refused bail to appear in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court.
Following the arrest, a Mount Gambier address was subsequently searched, and it will be alleged stolen items were recovered by police.
A 38-year-old local man was also arrested regarding the thefts on Thursday.
He was charged with theft and unlawful possession and bailed to appear in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court.
A SAPOL spokesperson urged local businesses to make sure they took precautions to minimise theft opportunities.
“Given that Christmas is just around the corner and shops may be carrying more stock than usual, local police also wish to remind owners they offer security audits of businesses if required,” the spokesperson said.
“To book a security audit, please contact the Limestone Coast Community Programs Section at Mount Gambier Police Station.
“To reduce the likelihood of thefts, police encourage businesses to ensure stock deliveries are made during business hours where possible, and that staff are on hand to receive such deliveries.
“In any case, police will continue to work closely with businesses to prevent loss and identify shop thieves.”
Anyone with information about shoplifting or stolen property can report it anonymously to police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
