Tigers roar in season opener

North Sportsman’s v West Gambier


North Sportsman’s started its Dycer Constructions Big Bash season with a win over West Gambier at Marist Park during round two.


West Gambier won the toss and chose to chase as North Sportsman’s batted first.


North’s first over started well with back to back boundaries from Nicholas Brown, but Isaac Mulraney was dismissed for a golden duck first ball of the second over by Kyal Chapman.


Elliot Fisher joined Brown at the crease and the pair scored well early, but just as the partnership began to become a problem for West Gambier the Roos broke through with Fisher bowled by Chapman for 21.


McInerney and Brown then piled on the runs together, in the 13th over Brown was dismissed on 40 by Chapman.


Chapman then took the wicket of McInerney for 48, leaving North 4/119 as McInerney departed for the stands.


Mitch Lewis followed the over after on two with Sam Willis picking up his first wicket.


Declan Kenny was a highlight in the final overs before falling an over short of seeing out the innings with Justin De Jong taking his first wicket of the match.


Entering the final over on 137 North had a good total on the board but failed to capitalise, only adding the two runs in the final over,


Willis picked up two wickets in the final over, as North finished with a total of 8/139 to defend.


West Gambier’s run chase started poorly with Richard Crute caught in the first over for two.


Timothy Young picked up the wicket of Crute and then put North in an even stronger position taking the wickets of Justin De Jong and Willis in the third over.


At 3/19 West Gambier found itself in trouble, still requiring 120 runs from the remaining 17 overs.


The top order troubles continued with McInerney bowling Prior for four.


Jack Geddes and Samuel Coxon offered some stability but both departed before becoming too damaging.


Chapman and Shane De Jong top scored for West Gambier after coming in at a difficult position.


The pair took West Gambier past the 100 mark and gave the side some hope it could get the result.


McInerney provided a massive breakthrough with Chapman caught behind on 44, McInerney then took another quick wicket with Joel Bull out for a golden duck.


Mulraney then snared the wicket of Shane De Jong on 21, and West was in serious trouble at 9/113 in the 19th over.


With one over left West required 20 runs while North only needed the one wicket.


After getting two runs on the first ball West was all out with Luke Rothall bowled by McInerney, as West finished 18 runs short.


Penola v East Gambier


Penola kicked off its big bash season with an impressive win over East Gambier at McCorquindale Park.


The Eagles won the toss and opted to bat first, hoping to set a big total.


Liam Turley caused huge problems for the Penola top order with Joshua Smith going for one, and Michael Waters and Logan Gibbs both dismissed by Turley for a duck.


Tom Moyle-Read survived and went on to score big for Penola, while his partners fell around him.


Penola became 4-14 when Jake Shultz was caught off the bowling of Marc Roberts for a duck.


Another two quick wickets had Penola in a disastrous position of 6-22.


George Kidman offered some support to Moyle-Read, but Roberts broke through with Kidman gone for 12.


Joshua Doyle and Zac Zema were both dismissed cheaply as the innings came to an end, Moyle-Read finished 59 not out, with Penola finishing 9/95.


The run chase proved difficult for East Gambier with the early wicket of Ben Hentschke.


Alex Hill took get East Gambier past fifty before being dismissed for 23 by Kidman.


Hill’s wicket was the start of a collapse as Alex Hentschke, Emerson Marks and Ben Robinson all fell cheaply and East Gambier quickly lost five wickets for eight runs.


Riley Flamank offered some lower order runs scoring a quick 18 before being caught from Waters’ bowling.


East Gambier needed 15 runs from the final over with only one wicket in hand, but Turley and Evan Clark only managed to score four runs as Penola finished 10 run winners.
