Tight baseball round

Another thrilling round of Mount Gambier and District Division 1 baseball opened with a tight defensive game between Federal and Tigers.

Federal eventually walked away with the win after the stalemate. Tigers opened the scoring in the second innings when Matt Thomson crossed the plate after reaching first base on a dropped catch at left field and moved around by Jacob English’s safe hit and a fielding error.

No further runs were scored for Tigers until the seventh inning by Brayden Morton, who also crossed home plate in the ninth as he piled the pressure on Federal’s fielders.

Tigers was also strong in the field and did not give up any runs until the eighth dig. But Federal’s youngest side steadied its nerves and capitalised facing Tigers’ relief pitcher to snatch the win.

Two runs were scored in the eighth from Josh Wilsmore and Alex Pearson, while Shane Howard, Kane McMillan and Pearson all crossed home plate in the ninth.

Alex Reppin pitched the whole game for Federal and secured 15 strike outs. South edged ahead of Millicent by one run in a tense fight.

Both sides batted well with many players securing two safe hits, but just one of the combined 11 runs were earned due to errors in both fields.

South had 11 safe hits to the Bandits’ seven and the former’s pitcher Bruce Morale returned from injury with 14 strike outs.
