Trust goes in to bat for endangered species

Limestone Coast Landscape Board Grassroots Grant recipient Nature Glenelg Trust has been working across the region undertaking cave audits for the critically endangered Southern Bent-wing bat.

Grassroots Grant funding has been used to audit caves in the region for obstructions to cave entrances.

Limestone Coast Landscape Board manager Steve Bourne said ensuring cave entrances provided a clear flight path for the Southern Bent-wing bat was crucial for their habitat and ongoing survival.

“Being able to provide Grassroots Grant funding for community groups in the region often means they can undertake important work sooner rather than later,” he said.

“In this case, cave auditing was identified as an urgent action to check cave entrances for the flight paths of the Southern Bent-wing bat.

“It’s a great outcome for this special fauna unique to the Limestone Coast and western Victoria.”

Applications for the next round of Grassroots Grants are open now.

Anyone with a project in mind that will support biodiversity or community landscape management in the Limestone Coast can contact grants officer Megan on 8429 7550.
