Undefeated Pioneers keen to consolidate dream season start

The OneFortyOne Pioneers women will again host a home match tomorrow night in round 3 of the NBL1 South conference.

The Pioneers will play host to the Launceston Tornadoes, who will venture from the Apple Isle in a bid to knock off the undefeated Mount Gambier side.

The locals sit third on the ladder behind the Ringwood Hawks and Bendigo Braves, only denied second place by percentage.

It will be Mount Gambier’s fifth game in 14 days, after having kicked off their season with a Victorian double header, followed by another double header at home last weekend in round 2.

The Tornadoes are yet to win their first game yet, currently sitting 16th on the ladder.

Pioneers head coach Matt Sutton has spent the week scouting the Tasmanians, determined to give his side every edge in tomorrow night’s clash, but reflecting on last weekend he said he was pleased with the outcome.

“There are still plenty of things to do and some things we need to highlight to get some work in for our games, but overall I’m happy with the passion and the will to win the girls are showing,” he said.

“The chemistry is starting to build, the girls have a real care for each other and are sharing a willingness to sacrifice in certain areas.

“We have still got some areas to work on which is common at this time of the year.

“But we always look forward to playing in front of our fans and hopefully we can continue to make them proud.”

Sutton said he had been watching some vision of the Tasmanian visitors in preparation for tomorrow night.

“They have got some players coming in, whether that’s for our game or the future they have some room to improve,” he said.

New Pioneers recruit Sammy Fatkin, who starred for her side with a double double on Sunday, said she was excited to be playing at home again.

“It’s a great atmosphere here, I really enjoyed playing for the first time at Wulanda,” she said.

“There is a really cool atmosphere and I love playing here.

“We’ll get to work this week and start prepping and back to doing the right things and on to the next game.”
