‘Wallaby watch’

Awandering dog has allegedly mauled a wallaby near Millicent, according to a local resident.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the resident claims the native animal was recently killed near the scrub block which runs between Matheson Road and Sandon Avenue.

The resident was on her regular dawn walk at 6.30am in that area and saw two large mixed-breed dogs.

“I decided to follow them and had my mobile phone with me and switched on the video-recording function,” the resident said.

“I came upon a neighbour and he said they were the same dogs which had been barking since 5am.

“We could see the dogs in the scrub block and they came near us but we could not catch them.

“My neighbour found the dead wallaby on a patch of grass which he had only mowed the previous day.”

The resident called the Wattle Range Council after hours call-out phone line and was pleased the dogcatcher was on the scene a short time later.

She said the council dogcatcher apprehended one of the dogs and informed the owner but the other eluded him.

There is no doubt in the mind of the resident the wandering dog killed the wallaby.

“The scrub block is home to a mob of wallabies,” the resident said.

“Dog owners should be responsible and do the right thing.

“Dogs should be housed in secure yards or else tied up and walked on leads.”

Wattle Range Council has been approached for comment.
