Member for MacKillop Nick McBride has not declared his hand about the future public access to Lake Bonney, Lake George and four other coastal lakes in this region.

The Department of Environment and Water has suggested numerous management changes including a ban on hunting in some areas.

The SE Voice approached Mr McBride, who provided a written statement in reply.

“The SE Coastal Lakes Strategy is an important document that gives the public the opportunity to be heard on how best to manage the six lakes,” Mr McBride said.

“I recognise these lakes have important Environmental, Cultural and European heritage value.

“I also recognise they are used widely for recreational purposes, such as duck hunting, boating, fishing, camping and birdwatching.”

“There is no doubt that some groups will be unhappy with the proposed changes, and as such, I urge them to lodge a submission so their views can be heard.

“There has to be a balance between management of the environment and managing the expectations of groups who want to continue to use and enjoy these areas in the ways they have for many years.”

Five of the six lakes lie entirely within the boundary of the MacKillop electorate.

Lake Bonney straddles MacKillop as well as the Mount Gambier electorate held by Independent MP Troy Bell.
