One of Penola’s oldest and most historic buildings dating back almost 150 years is infested with white ants.
Around 50% of the timber floorboards in the nave of St Mary’s Anglican Church have been pulled up and the area is currently out-of-bounds to worshippers.
Nevertheless, the regular schedule of Sunday and Thursday services has been maintained despite this inconvenience.
Church officials expect professional white ant exterminators to be onsite in the near future.
The Anglican Church has been dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, mother of Jesus Christ, since it was built in 1873.
The church was built near the site of the disused stable where pioneering Catholic nun Saint Mary MacKillop began her teaching work seven years earlier.
The Arthur Street church property features a number of stained-glass windows and marble tablets which honour the memory of past Penola parishioners.
