Wild night awaits at Borderline

Go Karts will make a long awaited return to Borderline Speedway tonight which kicks off a loaded triple-header of action.

The prize the hundred-plus drivers will be fighting for is none of other than the PRP Engineering 2022 SKAA Australian Speedway Karting Championship.

The national title marks Go Karts’ celebrated return to the “Bullring” after decade away from the Blue Lake City. Around 125 entries are listed for the triple dose of racing across nine categories.

Liam Aunger is the reigning national champion will be hard to miss racing around with the #A1 plate on his kart.

But all local eyes will be on Brad Turnbull, who will be the only driver in the massive field waving the Limestone Coast flag in his #17 machine across the Modifieds and Outlaws categories.

Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said the great occasion would bring many positives to the region.

“We will be hosting approximately 125 entries ranging from seven-year-olds to late 60s with a females class in there as well,” he said.

“Competitors are coming from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, Northern Territory and South Australia, so there will be somewhere between 70 to 80 families congregating at Borderline.

“Most of them will be supporting local accommodation, so the event will help the tourism industry and we also have lots of officials.

“We have strong senior and female fields, so it is all shaping up to be a good, competitive event.”

Jennings said it has been a long time since the Karts last graced the “Bullring” and he hopes the upcoming event can be the start of bigger things to come.

“We had go karts around 10 years ago, but they changed the licensing and people did not want to be involved,” he said.

“But hopefully this is the start of things to come if there is any interest and we will have a look at where we go in the future with them.”

Tonight practice will be held from 4-7pm before the club hosts a welcoming barbecue.

Friday’s schedule contains a driver’s briefing and racing from 4-10pm before the finals on Saturday from 4-9pm.
