World war veteran celebrated

The life and times of much loved Mount Gambier resident Charlie Miller were celebrated on Monday.

Mr Miller, a former World War II Spitfire pilot, died last month aged 96.

A funeral was held in Victoria for his family earlier this month, while an invite-only memorial service was held this week at Mount Gambier’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, with 150 people in attendance.

The service, hosted by Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin, was also live streamed on the South East Funeral Services Facebook page and more than 120 people joined to watch.

There was a host of speakers at the service, including Mount Gambier RSL President Bob Sandow, Brian Graney who spoke about Mr Miller’s bakery and long-time friend Dr Richard Strickland.

Sharon Tuffnell spoke on behalf of Mr Miller’s beloved Park Street residents, while Mr Miller’s son Tony also delivered a video eulogy from Melbourne.

The service finished with Mr Sandow reciting The Ode and the Last Post being played.
