Wulanda ‘charged up’

The Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre has been earmarked as a potential site for an electric vehicle charging station.

In response to a question with notice tabled by councillor Max Bruins, City Infrastructure general manager Barbara Cernovskis said council had been liaising with the RAA.

Though Wulanda has been identified as a site of interest, it was noted some issues with this site location were currently being worked through.

“We are currently working through some issues with this site location due to the Community Land Management Plan,” Ms Cernovskis said.

Meanwhile, Ms Cernovskis said an investigation was under way to identify other possible sites within the city’s CBD.

“Our opportunity to provide input was by invitation in regard to what we saw as suitable sites that would be able to service the community,” she said.

Commerce Place car park within the CBD and the Lady Nelson Visitor Centre were other locations council recommended the RAA consider.

Ms Cernovskis said council was not aware of the number other sites identified nor the process.

The RAA has been overseeing the roll out of a $12.4m State Government funded electric vehicle charging network.

Mount Gambier is one of the first regional centres to have a station installed.

Located at the Southgate Motel, the new station provides charging up to 7 kilowatts and is available for guest and public use.

RAA chief executive officer Nick Reade said it was important that regional areas have access to EV technology.

He also said there were plans in the works to deliver a number of stations in the network around the region.

Beachport, Robe, Kingston, Naracoorte, Bordertown, and Keith were also listed as other charging site locations.

It is intended the network would have no more than 200km between charging points, to remove the ‘range anxiety’ for EV owners.

“Other charging site locations for the Limestone Coast will be confirmed in due course,” Mr Reade said.

“DC rapid and ultra-rapid charging infrastructure will provide charging up to 150kW and 200kW.”

The Limestone Coast towns will be among 52 rural, regional and metropolitan locations to receive a total of 536 new EV charging stations throughout the state.

Construction of the state-wide network is expected to be completed in 2024.
