Young Eagles soar above competition

Demons v Hatherleigh

The Demons suffered its third straight defeat in the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League Under 16 season, held scoreless for the second week in a row in its round three clash against Hatherleigh.

Hatherleigh continued its excellent start to the season with its third win from as many games over a struggling Demons side.

The first quarter gave an early insight into where the match was headed with Hatherleigh taking off to have a 23 point lead.

The Eagles’ dominance continued in the second quarter as they piled on two more goals and kept South Gambier scoreless.

Hatherleigh’s midfield was well on top of the contest not giving the opposition midfield a chance to impact the match.

At the main break Hatherleigh’s lead had ballooned out to 42 points, and the Demons had some work to do in the second half to get back into the match.

Hatherleigh’s third quarter offered more of the same as it continued to add to its total.

The Demons provided more resistance in the third quarter and their defence held the Hatherleigh forward line to a single goal for the quarter.

Despite the Demons defenders’ efforts in the third quarter the match was all but over going into the final term.

Hatherleigh sealed the deal in the final quarter booting three final quarter majors against a tired Demons defence.

The final score was Hatherleigh 9.19 (73) to Demons 0.0 (0) with the Eagles keeping its winning streak going, while the Demons’ winless run continues.

Best players for the Demons on a tough day were Bailey Broome, Emily Walker and Meah Beveridge, while Hatherleigh’s standouts were Chloe Bellinger, Sebella Coghlan, Scarlett Zalme, Hannah Bellinger and Ashlee Dean.

Mackenzie Burke was the danger player in Hatherleigh forward 50 kicking three goals for the game to add to her five from the first two rounds to lead the goal kicking for the league early in the season.

The Demons will now go into the bye winless with hopes of improving its results after the break.

Hawks v Kyby Tigers

Kyby Tigers secured their second win of the season, subjecting the Hawks to their second straight defeat.

Kyby started off well keeping Hawks scoreless in the first quarter and kicking one goal themselves.

The Hawks managed to score their first goal of the match in the second quarter, while the Tigers added a goal to take an eight point lead into the half time break.

The midfield battle proved the difference with both teams fighting hard for first use of the footy. Kyby again added one goal for the quarter to take the lead out to 16 points at three quarter time.

Going into the final term the match was still hanging in the balance, and the Hawks kicked off a comeback with the first goal of the fourth.

The Tigers defence tightened and did not allow the Hawks to score for the remainder of the match.

Despite not scoring a goal in the final quarter Kyby Tigers held on for their second win of the season, winning 3.6 (24) to 2.1(13).

The Hawks’ standouts in a challenging match were Imogen McLeod, Sophie Longbottom, Aynslee Hayman, Abby Brant, Rahni Janeway and Lily Milich, while Kyby’s best were Alice McKenzie, Grace Altschwager, Eadie Mustart, Evie Mott, Chloe Crouch and Sinead Legoe.

Grace Altschwager proved the difference between the two sides, kicking two goals for the match.

Kyby now sits second on the ladder after two matches, while the Hawks slip down to fourth and remain without a win heading into their round four match against the Tigers.
