New cricket season fielded

Sims Shield

The 2023/24 Sims Shield kicked off on Tuesday night with two games played to get the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association season under way.

The reigning premiers Millicent played East Gambier in a one day match, while Gambier Centrals took the field against last season’s finalists Mount Burr, with the other four matches playing on Friday night.

The Under 12s have excellent numbers this season with 12 teams nominated.

The first two rounds will offer the chance for the young cricketers to play some one day cricket, with the two day matches starting in round three.

Last season’s runners up Penola will start the season against Mil Lel, while Kalangadoo and Kongorong lock horns.

Season 2022/23 finalist South Gambier will host Yahl at Blue Lake Sports Park and West Gambier will play Glencoe at Tenison Woods College.

Hall Trophy

The Hall Trophy Under 14 season will begin on Saturday morning with six teams set to compete as reigning premiers Mil Lel face off against a Gambier Centrals/West Gambier team hoping to improve on last year’s results.

Millicent will look to go a step further than last season after finishing as runner up and will take the field against last year’s wooden spooners Penola/Naracoorte.

Finalist from last year South Gambier will start its season with a trip to Mount Burr for round one.

O’Donoghue Shield

The O’Donoghue Shield will also have six Under 17 teams in 2023/24 with the season beginning tomorrow night.

Mil Lel will host East Gambier at Reidy Park in a one day match, with East hoping to get its season off on the right foot after finishing second last season and failing to make the grand final.

Last season’s runners up South Gambier will travel to Penola to play Penola/Naracoorte, while the reigning premiers Millicent will play last year’s wooden spooners.

Millicent will be aim for its second O’Donoghue Shield in four years this season and possibly its third grand final appearance in a row.
