30 game win streak brought to an end

South brought their A game to the park on a cold damp Saturday night for the latest round of the Mount Gambier and District Baseball League.

They opened the scoring in the top of the second scoring a solitary run.

Ryan Placucci hit safely to short stop and scored on an infield error from Deklin Joyce’s hit.

They then piled on four unearned runs in the very next inning when Wade Chant drew a walk, Tarkyn Morale hit into a fielder’s choice, and Brandon Horrigan’s hit back to the pitcher resulted in a wild throw that loaded the bases.

Jett Lewis then picked base on balls that advanced all runners scoring the first of four runs.

The next three runners all crossed home on Ryan Placucci’s very deep two bagger to left field.

Not to be outdone, Central hit back in the bottom of the sixth going ahead by one.

Sam Ruwoldt, Daniel Ferguson and Jakob Walkom all received a walk from a tiering South pitcher.

Ruwoldt crossed the plate on a wild throw from Bree ridding’s hit into a fielder’s choice while the following two were batted in when David Harris hit safely to rightfield.

Both Ridding and Harris added to the scoreline after Colby Muller hit deep to leftfield with a triple.

He scored on Dylan Chuck’s sacrifice fly to rightfield giving the Magpies the lead by one.

In the top of the seventh with two out Ryan Placucci hit safe for the third time in the game and was batted in when Deklin Joyce hit the ball out of reach of the centre fielder to tie the game up at six apiece.

In the top of the ninth again with two out Jesse Balshaw found himself at first base on a fielder’s choice, Deklin Joyce thumped the ball to rightfield to advance Balshaw to third.

Travis Lockwood’s hit into the infield created an error by the Central short stop that scored Balshaw putting the Indians one run ahead with Central to bat in the even dig.

Unfortunately they could not find an opportunity to reply.

For the winners, they gave up six walks, one hit batter, four safe-hits, made four errors but picked up seven strikeouts.

For the losers they gave up four walks, eight safe-hits, also made four errors and picked up five strikeouts.

The Division 1 game from Friday night between Federal and Tigers was abandoned in the first inning because of the weather.

It has been rescheduled for 6pm tonight.
