Green thumbs and rev heads unite

St Mary’s Vineyard in Penola was abuzz on the weekend when the St Mary’s Open Garden and Limestone Coast Plant and Trade Fair came together with the Penola Show ‘n’ Shine.

The event was organised by St Mary’s Wines and Open Gardens South Australia and all proceeds from the event entry went towards Open Gardens SA and the Terra Rossa Branch of the CWA.

More than 1000 people attended the picturesque garden and cellar door to enjoy a weekend of plant stalls, art displays, trade stalls, a dry stone walling demonstration, food, wine, St Mary’s spirits and cocktails.

Penola Show ‘n’ Shine organiser Rebecca Agnew said the event was a success, with a mixed crowd attending.

“We had a total of 31 entries for the day, with a few more vehicles turning up and parking just to have a look,” she said.

“It was great to see the community pull together in such an uncertain time and help create a great social event.”

Ms Agnew said there were entries from utes to American muscle cars and modern Australian built vehicles to vintage classics, including an 80s model Corvette making a trip from Adelaide.

Each class winner received a trophy and a bottle of Mulligans Spiced Cane Spirit Rum.

Ms Agnew said she could not thank their sponsors and the Mulligan family enough.

“Pairing with the garden day and the open cellar door at St Mary’s was a real strong point I feel,” she said.

“I’m grateful for the support the Mulligan family showed, both with donating their award-winning Cane Spirit as a prize for each winner and with supplying us with a beautiful setting to hold the event.”

Ms Agnew said she was looking forward to next year’s event and had already started planning.

“It’s sparked a good community event and I’m hopeful we can continue to grow in the future,” she said.
