Animal cruelty probe

Police are investigating a case of alleged animal abuse, following an incident in Mount Gambier on the weekend.

A cat was allegedly tortured on Saturday evening, with a video circulating on social media.

Several teenagers allegedly urged their dog to attack a cat near Conroe Heights, before setting the cat alight.

A SAPOL spokesman said police had been contacted about the incident, which occurred about 11.40pm.

“Police are aware of a video circulating online which shows several people setting fire to a dead cat on a roundabout at North Terrace,” he said.

“Police have spoken to the persons involved and are investigating the matter.”

Local animal rescue advocate Cindy Tully said she was horrified by the incident.

“It sickens me to the core how some people think they can treat animals and get away with it,” she said.

“I do not want this happening in my backyard so to speak.

“This simply cannot go unnoticed, it is not okay to treat animals in this way.

“We all know what individuals that perpetrate this type of behaviour are capable of.

“This must be acted on and the individuals punished to the full extent of the law.”
