Inaugural First Nations Voice to Parliament nominations open

Nominations for the South Australian First Nations Voice to Parliament Election are now open.

The South Australian First Nations Voice to Parliament Election is on Saturday, March 16, 2024.

South Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders will vote to elect representatives to the South Australian First Nations Voice to Parliament.

Only South Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can vote and nominate as a candidate in the South Australian First Nations Voice to Parliament Election.

Electoral Commission of South Australia (ECSA) Director of Communications James Trebilcock said the South Australian First Nations Voice to Parliament Election was the opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to choose who will represent them and their communities in the South Australian First Nations Voice to Parliament.

“Nominations are now open for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to nominate as candidates in the South Australian First Nations Voice election.

These elected representatives will advise on laws, policies and programs that affect South Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders through direct communication with key government decision-makers,” he said.

“Any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander can nominate to run as a candidate for their Local First Nations Voice as long as they meet the relevant eligibility criteria.

“Lodging your nomination is simple.

“Head to savoiceelection.sa.gov.au to complete the nomination form and submit the required documentation.

“You can also download a nomination pack from the website if you do not want to complete one online, or if you do not have access to the internet, call 1300 655 232, and we’ll send one to you.

“Just remember, if you wish to stand as a candidate, you must have completed and submitted your application before 5PM on Monday, February 12, to nominate.”

There are six Local First Nations Voice regions across the state.

SA Voice to Parliament representatives will be elected by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living within each Local First Nations Voice region.

To stand as a representative in a Local First Nations Voice, you must first nominate yourself.

To be eligible, you must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and:

•Live in the region you want to nominate for, or, if you are a Traditional Owner, have cultural connections to the region you wish to nominate for.

•Be enrolled on the State Electoral Roll by February 12.

• Be 18 years or older.

• Submit an eligible nomination form.
