Athletes line up for extra funding

An annual event that attracts top athletes to compete in Mount Gambier is seeking additional financial support from City Council.

The South Australian Athletic League has already been provided with $7000 financial support from council towards the Mount Gambier Gift Carnival and is requesting a further $5000 for the event.

SAAL president Kym Steer will make a presentation to council when it meets for its October monthly meeting today.

The original request was for $20,000, however council agreed to $7000 which has been split into $5000 cash and $2000 in-kind.

It is anticipated Mr Steer’s presentation will discuss the purpose of the increased sponsorship request.

South Australian and Victorian Athletic Leagues have joined forces to host this year’s carnival.

Scheduled to take place at Vansittart Park on November 25, the event promises to showcase the very best athletic talent from both states.

The races are handicapped, ensuring thrilling finishes that will keep you on the edge of your seat, with the free event designed for families and spectators of all ages.

The event kicks off at 12.30pm with engaging commentary from Ollie Wurm.

The race card includes men’s, women’s, under 18 boys and girls, under 14, over 35 and open age groups competing in 70m, 120m, 300m, 400m and 1600m.
