Axe hangs over trees

Mature trees at Penola could be spared the axe if a rescindment motion is passed by Wattle Range Council tonight.

Last month, Kintore ward councillor Peter Dunnicliff moved the council remove the cypress trees from the Penola parklands.

His motion also stated the cypresses would be replaced with appropriate trees as a part of the Coonawarra Rail Trail landscape development and maintained as part of the annual operational budget.

The motion was opposed by three councillors including Riddoch ward Councillor Dean Burrow.

He spoke in favour of retaining the cypress trees last month and has submitted the rescindment motion.
