The Riddoch Highway was closed to traffic yesterday following a fire near Willalooka.


The blaze started about 11am on land near Cannawigara Road, Chain Pump Road and the Riddoch Highway.


Country Fire Service volunteers joined with private farm firefighting units to tackle the blaze, which prompted the highway to be closed for several hours.


The fire was contained around 2pm, after burning through one hectare of grassland. Crews remained on the scene well into the afternoon to mop up.


Residents in the area were urged to monitor the conditions, while drifting smoke from the fire proved hazardous for motorists.
