Bronze secured on national stage

Mount Gambier emerging athlete Hamish Gordon has won bronze in the U13 Boys Javelin at the national 2023 Coles Australia Little Athletics Championships in Melbourne.

Gordon also placed fourth in shot put, ninth in discus, 11th in the 200m sprring and 12th in 100 metre spring on the national stage.

He qualified for all five events after medalling in them at the Little Athletics State Individual Championships.

Gordon, 13, said the national medal was one of his most cherished achievements in the sport.

“It was good, I enjoyed it quite a bit,” he said.

“I want to try go to nationals again (next year).”

At the state level Gordon won gold in discus, shotput and javelin, claimed silver in the 200 metres and bronze in the 100 metres.

The young gun was also the male captain for the U13 team and won the U13 male state championship award due to his showstopping performance.

This is following on from the Mount Gambier District Athletics where Gordon recorded three centre records for shot put, javelin and discus which he said are his favourite events.

The Tenison Woods College student has also seen success with his sport on a school level, placing in all six events he competed in at the Tenison Woods College School athletics carnival and breaking four college records.

Gordon placed first in shotput, discus, javelin, 200 metres and long jump and claimed third in high jump.

He then competed in the same six events at Interschool Athletics and won them all, as well as setting another three records.

At the Catholic School Athletics Day in Adelaide for Division 2, the young talent won javelin, shot put, 100 and 200 metre sprints and was runner up in relay, breaking another two records.

Gordon travelled to Brisbane last year to represent School Sports SA in the 2022 School Sport Australia Championships in the U12 team.

A strong performance resulted in bronze in the combined event (100 metre, 800 metre, shotput and long jump) and silver in shotput which he said was one of his proudest achievements.

Gordon first got involved in the sport in the Mount Gambier Little Athletics U9 team.

“(Athletics) was another sport I could get into,” he said.

“Sally Taylor has been a really good running coach in the community.”
