Tower builds on victory streak

Tower has emerged victorious for the second consecutive year in the Ian Gould Interhouse Athletics Competition held at Mount Gambier High School.

The winning team towered over its competition to claim the victory after a narrow one point triumph last year.

Participation from all teams was high throughout the competition, with many pushing through the challenging weather to achieve personal bests.

Tower was successfully led by its captains Zeb Chant and Sarah Ritter, while being well supported by vice captains Jamie Williamson and Chelsea Owen.

Mount Gambier High School Special Sports Coordinator Kerran Wingard said the addition of the new under 13 years age group only added to the success and atmosphere of the carnival, with many of the younger students getting involved in their first high school athletics carnival.

Mr Wingard said it was rewarding to see the new Year 7 and 8 students get involved in the carnival.

“Their enjoyment was evident in the number of smiling faces across the two days,” he said.

“The ability of all students to adapt to the conditions over the two days was exceptional.

“Our student leaders from all houses did a fantastic job by encouraging students to do their best in a wide variety of events.

“The Mount Gambier High School staff, particularly the grounds staff, were amazing and extremely professional in their roles. They all went above and beyond to ensure we had a successful carnival.”

Year 12 student Hayden Crowe won the Craig Elliott Perpetual Award for the third year in a row which recognises the most outstanding individual performance of the carnival.

Hayden’s performances in the open boys 400m were outstanding as he claimed the new record in this event in wet conditions.

The previous mark of 52.60s was held by John Shepherdson since 1969 until Hayden set a new time of 51.59s.

In Week 8, Mount Gambier High School will host the 77th Annual South East Zone Athletics Carnival.

“We look forward to hosting the Zone Interschool Athletics Carnival which should see some strong competition between all of the schools involved,” Mr Wingard said.

The school’s athletics team will also compete in the SSSA Athletics Carnival in Adelaide in Week 11 provided COVID restrictions are lifted.
