Catamaran claws out victory

The Port MaDonnell Sailing Club hosted races 17 and 18 on Saturday and after a blow out last week, four boats were eager to take to the water to race.

Race Officer Dave Evans, assisted by Damian McMahon, set the course for the day.

They set a triangle-loop-triangle course with starboard rounding of the marks.

This made for the perfect course for catamarans, of which there was one racing on the day.

Noelex 25 ‘Sandrine’, skippered by Chris Lynch, had the perfect start and crossed the line first ahead of Nick Watson’s catamaran ‘Billy 2’.

‘Sandrine’ was able to hold the lead at the first and second marks, but shortly after that ‘Billy 2’ snuck up and overtook them.

‘Billy 2’ was then able to hold onto the lead and crossed the finish line in first position.

Sonata ‘Harmony’, with Don McLennan at the helm was able to overtake ‘Sandrine’ after they had a few issues during the race. ‘Harmony’ was then able to keep their position as the fastest trailable boat and crossed the finish line in second position.

The wind direction swung from south-south east to south east for the start of the second race.

There was some confusion at the start of the second race, with three boats converging on the start line in the same position. ‘Harmony’ came out in front and crossed the start line in first position.

They were closely followed by ‘Billy 2’.

‘Billy 2’ took advantage of the course being perfect for the boat type and raced ahead of the rest of the fleet. ‘Harmony’, despite being slower than the catamaran, made use of their good start to maintain their position ahead of the other two monohull trailable boats.

Once more ‘Billy 2’ was able to take line honours, with ‘Harmony’ coming across the line in second position.
