Christmas countdown is on

The countdown has officially begun until children and families line the streets of Mount Gambier for this year’s Mount Gambier Christmas Parade, sponsored by AAM Timber.

The 2023 event welcomes a new major sponsor AAM Timber, after taking over from NF McDonnell and Sons.

Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM said the AAM Timber Mount Gambier Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday, November 18.

“After bringing the magic of the event back to Commercial Street last year, we are excited to continue the tradition to mark the beginning of the festive season in Mount Gambier,” Mayor Martin said.

“It’s always a joyful day with the smiling faces and excitement of the children, both lining the streets and taking part in the parade.

“I encourage everyone to mark the date of the parade in their calendars and join us in welcoming Father Christmas to our city.”

AAM Executive Director – Timber Ben Edser said the company was launching a new national brand for its timber businesses which reflected its focus on using 100% Australian renewable plantation timber.

“Many of our timber businesses were established by local families and it is our priority to maintain their legacies and connection to local communities, including the continued support of the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade the McDonnell family and business have supported for many years now,” Mr Edser said.

Mount Gambier City Council community events team leader Xarnia Keding said the parade will be full of colourful floats, cheerful characters, bands, dancers and more.

“This magical event comes to life with the incredible support of community members of all ages and our hardworking volunteers have already started work on preparation for the Parade,” Ms Keding said.

Entries for the parade will open on September 1.

“With more than $3500 in prize money to be won, we encourage all community groups, sporting clubs, schools, businesses and individuals to fill in an entry form and bring their Christmas spirit to the streets,” Mrs Keding said.

“There is no cost to participate, and entries may vary from walking and marching performances to larger float displays.”

Entrants are eligible for any award with only one prize per entry.

Entries will be judged individually on creativity, effort, visual appeal, energy, engagement, and recycling focus.

Christmas Parade Guidelines and entry forms will be available on council’s website, and printed copies will be available at the Mount Gambier Visitor Centre, Mount Gambier Library, Civic Centre or The Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre from September 1.

Entries close on October 18 at 5pm.
