Council flies rainbow flag

The Rainbow Gay Pride flag will now be flown outside the Millicent council chambers on a permanent basis every November.

Flying the multi-coloured flag is considered to be an act of solidarity with the LGBTIQA+ community.

Wattle Range Council slightly changed its flag-flying policy at its July monthly meeting.

In the past three years, the council has endorsed an annual request from the organisers of the Pridevember Festival to fly the flag to coincide with the festival in Adelaide

Correspondence from Pridevember Festival representative Rebecca Galdies regarding flying the Gay Pride flag for the month of November was tabled.

Councillor David Walshaw then moved the council agree to fly the Gay Pride Flag perpetually during the month of November and his motion was seconded by Cr Chris Brodie.

The only comment came from chief executive Ben Gower who reminded councillors that this was a permanent decision.

Cr Walshaw’s motion then attracted unanimous support when it was put to a vote.

Speaking to The SE Voice in a private capacity outside the meeting, Cr Walshaw said he appreciated the support of all his fellow councillors.

“Flying the rainbow flag is symbolic of recognition, of being seen for who we are and of that being celebrated,” Cr Walshaw said.
