Special cargo set for Robe fishing vessel

Special cargo set for Robe fishing vessel

There will be a small amount of extra “cargo” aboard one of the Robe-based fishing vessels when it plies the waters of the Southern Ocean in search of lobsters over the 2023/24 season.

One will be carrying a ceremonial crucifix which will feature in a key part of the annual Blessing of the Fleet at Robe on August 27.

The celebrant will bless the crucifix during the service and then toss it into the waters of the Lake Butler Marina.

The retrieved cross will then be carried throughout the upcoming season and such a yearly activity is replicated at fishing villages across the globe.

Another important aspect of the Blessing of the Fleet is the laying of wreaths at the nearby fishermen’s memorial.

The celebrant will also bless the fishing boats as they move around the marina.

Support in staging the public event is provided by the Robe Professional Fishermen’s Association.

Fishers anticipate the season will commence on September 1 with the same quota as before.
