Foundation focus remains rock solid

The Stand Like Stone Foundation hosted its inaugural “A Year In Review” last week to celebrate its work in the Limestone Coast over the past 12 months.

The event was attended by around 50 people including Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM, Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll, foundation chair Robert Mock and patron Sue Charlton AM.

Local Boandik Elder Aunty Michelle Jacquelin-Furr started off the celebrations with a Welcome to Country, followed by an introduction from foundation chief executive Roger Babolka and a tribute to the late founding donor and patron Brian Page, delivered by former chief executive Georgie McKay.

A tribute to Mr Page was also delivered earlier this year in Federal Parliament by Member for Barker Tony Pasin.

Mr Mock presented his chair’s report before Mr Babolka took to the stage again, this time for a speech.

Mr Babolka said it had been a year of two halves, with the second half being less restricted by COVID-19 limitations.

“Thankfully we were able to hold our major fundraiser Swinging with the Stars in 2022, which was once again a spectacular success,” he said.

“With over 500 attending The Barn (Palais) in June to watch eight local stars and their dance partners strut their stuff, it was a very clear reflection of the tremendous dedication and efforts by many.

“We also take this time to thank all those who supported our stars with generous donations, scholarship, in-kind support and encouragement.

“It is important to take this time to thank all who have contributed to the operation of the foundation over the last 12 months.

“Thank you for your efforts and ongoing support, in short we cannot do what we need to without your input and support.

“Be assured our vision of inspiring community kindness and courage will continue to be reflected in everything the foundation undertakes and remains the driving force for all of us here at the Stand Like Stone Foundation.”

In 2021/2022 the organisation provided over $210,000 in grants, scholarships and fundraising support to the Limestone Coast including the Youth Opportunities program supported by OneFortyOne.

Youth Opportunities community development committee member Richard McDonough told the crowd about the program including its origin and impacts.

Past Youth Opportunities graduate and scholarship recipient Hayley Wakefield also took to the stage, speaking about her experiences, particularly the difference the program made to her secondary schooling journey.
