Funds to flow for Penola school

A major funding injection for Penola High School is anticipated by Wattle Range Council.

Chief executive Ben Gower said he was expecting an announcement would be made by the State Government.

Mr Gower gave scant details about the nature of the funds at the March monthly council meeting in Millicent.

He was responding to a question-without-notice from Councillor Dale Price about any local spending commitments by the parties ahead of the State Election on Saturday. It was the only one outlined by Mr Gower.

Cr Price was the principal of Penola Primary School for 14 years ahead of his retirement in 2010.

The school shares a boundary with the McKay Children’s Centre (kindergarten) and had an enrolment of 182 in 2021.

It formerly provided secondary classes as well before the erection of Penola High School in the 1960s. Going on 2020 and 2021 figures recently published in a council agenda, Mary MacKillop Memorial Catholic Primary School at Penola has an enrolment of 87 while Penola High School’s is 90.

Towns in this region with a comparable population to Penola such as Keith and Kingston have R-12 schools.
