Grant District celebrates

The Grant District Council honoured its Australia Day awards recipients with a gathering at Casadio Park on Friday.

Grant Mayor Kylie Boston joined with elected members to host the occasion, which kicked off with a citizenship ceremony.

Mayor Boston said the Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards were an exceptional occasion to celebrate the contributions that residents and organisations make to the local community.

“We have many individuals and groups who are committed to making a positive impact in the community, so it is important they are celebrated for their efforts over the past year, and in most cases over many years of service,” she said.

“Our district would not be as strong and vibrant as it is without their efforts.”

Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Liza Kirby, who has spent many years coordinating the annual Mil Lel Spring Show, and who is a life member of the Mil Lel A&H Show Society.

Young Citizen of the Year was presented to Angus Millard, who is the 2023 South Australian Rural Youth Ambassador and a committed Allendale East Area School student.

Generations in Jazz was named the Community Event of the Year, after the event made its long-awaited return to its regular format last year following COVID disruptions.

The Active Citizenship Award was presented to Zack Williams and Mark Smith for the ‘Bellum to Bay’ event, which saw them run from the Bellum Hotel to Port MacDonnell Golf Club, raising mental health awareness and funding for mental health organisations.
