Grassroots Grants support hands-on learning

Students from Newbery Park Primary School have enhanced their skills in environmental and cultural knowledge as part of the Limestone Coast Landscape Board’s Grassroots Grants
program.

The students have benefited from the 2021/22 funding program, which expanded their learning experiences outside of the classroom.

There have been a variety of outdoor excursions undertaken for students to engage in the landscape and gain cultural knowledge from local, respected First Nation elders and ecologists across the region.

Newbery Park Primary School Student Support Officer Angela Jones is supporting delivery of the Grassroots Grants project.

“Students were most excited to get a hands-on sustainable fishing experience in Beachport during December, all while learning about the importance of fish size limits, bag/boat limits and ways to reduce the harm caused to the local landscape,” Ms Jones said.

“Students caught multiple fish for the day, which turned out to be a highlight.

“The fantastic funding opportunity has really created another element for our cultural learning, providing these hands-on experiences which allow the students to fully engage in learning.”

The Limestone Coast Landscape Board offers Grassroots Grant funding for individuals, volunteers, community groups and other organisations working on a not-for-profit basis with landscape management projects.

Applications for the 2022/2023 Grassroots Grants will be open from March 18.
