High school musical showcase

High school musical showcase

In a first for Millicent High School and the community, an event showcasing student musicians will be held this evening.

The inaugural Millicent High School Music Showcase will feature MHS music students performing an entertaining and diverse program of music across a wide range of musical genres.

MHS music teacher Evelyn Wood would like the music showcase to become an annual event.

“I believe it’s very important for students to have access to meaningful, real-world performance opportunities to develop their skills as musicians,” she said.

“I am hoping to host a music showcase every year as an event for music students to work towards.

“They have been working hard all year to learn their instruments and get these pieces together, so I decided to host a showcase so that students could present their music outside of the school environment.”

Ms Wood has been focusing on helping learners to read music, develop rehearsal and performance practices and work effectively as ensemble and solo performers.

“This is an extra-curricular activity. Although it’s outside of school hours, students are extremely excited to be involved and present their music to the wider community,” she said.

“Performance skills and opportunities as a musician are incredibly important, so we hope to hone our performance craft with many more local shows in the near future.”

The music cohort has grown substantially in size over the last two years.

“Our junior band, senior band and the instrumental music program now boasts over 30 students in total,” Ms Wood said.

Under the guidance of music teachers Cameron Horsburgh, Neil Bensted, Jane Van Eyk and Geoff Stephens, students have been working with students to refine skills on their instrument and develop a varied musical repertoire.

Playing a range of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments, the audience can expect to be entertained with music from a wide range of musical genres.

“There will be rock bands, pianists, vocal solos, a concert band and much more,” Ms Wood said.

The showcase will be held on November 7 at the Milicent Civic and Arts Centre, starting at 5.30pm

Tickets are available for purchase at the school front office for $2.
