Junior standings take shape as final cricket round looms

Under 12 Sims shield Mil Lel v Kongorong

Kongorong started at a fast clip in their run chase to get 127 with Angelino making 36 from 25 balls.

However with his dismissal the Mil Lel bowlers took control of the game and together with some good fielding restricted Kongorong to 6/89 off their 30 overs. Virtanen took 1/6 plus four catches while Angelino scored 36.

Under 14 Mixed Juniors Penola v West

The second week of round 8 was played on Saturday for the Mount Gambier Under 14s competition.

With a finals place on the line, the Naracoorte/Penola Under 14s had to beat West Gambier.

The weather was overcast and warm and both teams were ready to play, with Jaxon Hewlett and Connor Tweddle opening the West innings and Bernie Watson and Charlie Cox being the opening bowlers for Naracoorte.

West played a number of good shots in the first eight overs and Naracoorte bowled in the right places.

Watson and Cox finished their spells, Watson with 0/6 and Cox 0/4.

Next to bowl were Lachlan Gericke and Eamon Southern.

These overs were big for Naracoorte, both bowlers were bowling well, building a lot of pressure on the West batters.

Eventually, Hewlett tried to play a big shot, but was out caught by Darcy Pilkington. West were 1/21 when Kane Jeffery arrived at the crease.

The next overs were good for West, with both batsmen making good runs and Tweddle retiring for 11.

Tom Richards came to the crease for West, while Jack Pilkington and Jack Kay were bowling. Both Richards and Jeffery came out firing, making quick runs from their first few balls.

They had to bat against some of Naracoorte’s experienced bowlers in James Bull, Sid Ebert and Pilkington.

Naracoorte eventually got the wicket they needed, with Jeffery being caught for eight off Pilkington’s bowling and West were 2/57.

In came Kalan Price who tried to get a quick start to his innings, smacking the ball around before a quick catch from Bryce Catlin’s bowling ended his spell.

Bailey Noble was next to bat, with West sitting 3/73, Richards retired not long after, making a well-made 20.

Next in was Anush Das, who stuck around while Noble was smacking the ball around the park, eventually retiring with a strong 30.

Ethan Brooks, who was trying to make quick runs, got out for a six-ball duck, being run out by Gericke which sent Naite Fox in to bat with West at 4/112.

Wickets started to fall soon after, with Catlin claiming two more and Ebert joining the party with one and West finishing its innings on 7/126.

Thanks to sponsor Naracoorte Sportspower, Sam Gericke was rewarded with a $10 voucher for his consistent fielding and bowling.

Next week, Naracoorte takes on the powerful Millicent for a chance to make the finals on the line. Other results of the day were South losing to Mil Lel by 145 runs, and Millicent winning by 120 runs against Mount Burr.

Under 17 O’Donoghue shield West Gambier v South Gambier

South Gambier overnight were 0/2 in reply to West Gambier’s 111.

South started cautiously with the West bowlers bowling some tight line and lengths making it hard for them to score freely.

James Miller and Jase Maxwell negated the first 10 overs before Miller was trapped LBW to Patrick Dycer to have South 1/19.

Finn Skeer was bowling well without luck, keeping the batsman guessing, but it was Dycer who struck again bowling Jace Maxwell for 14 and South was 2/28.

Skipper Jayden Prior came into the attack and struck straight away, dismissing Noah Maxwell for 9 and Jed Sims for 14 both LBW.

Tyler Rothall kept the runs to a minimum as South were 4/55 at the halfway point and the match was evenly poised.

The A Grade duo for South Gambier of skipper Ellwood Geary and Jared Kuhl then put on a match-winning partnership over the next 10 overs for 75 runs.

West opening bowlers Robbie Case and Bailey Rothall toiled hard to pry a wicket for the Roos, but the two survived and started hitting out as the game went on.

Geary (44) and Kuhl (47) retired before Sam Domaschenz was dismissed by Kahne Jeffrey for 10, Archie Millich was bowled by James Williams for six and Scott McBain bowled by Prior for one, followed by some big hitting from Jagger Geary to be 25no at stumps which led South to reach 7/200 and cement a finals berth.

Prior’s 3/14 and Dycer’s 2/24 were the best with the ball, Kuhl 47, E.Geary 44 and J.Geary 25no were the best for South with the bat.
