Juniors survive first finals test

The Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Netball Association hosted its qualifying and elimination finals across two days on the weekend.

Penola’s A Grade side took on Keith at Kingston on Saturday, unfortunately going down by three.

The 13 & Under A team faced Kingston at Frances on Sunday, winning by two.

Keith v Penola

Both teams started with some finals nerves in the A Grade, however, by the end of the first quarter they settled into the flow of the game.

Sophie Makin dominated the second quarter allowing Keith to increase their lead by three at half time.

Keith had a strong start in the third quarter extending their lead to eight, however Penola managed to close this gap back to three by three quarter time.

Both teams played a consistent last quarter with Keith finishing off the game steady to finish ahead by three, 46-43.

Sophie Makin was best on court for Keith and Riley Buckingham took the honours for Penola.

Penola v Kingston

In the 13A match Penola came out firing in the first to finish six up at quarter time. Nerves settled in the Kingston line up to win the second by two goals.

Penola’s Sophie Pearce and Lily Flint added pressure to the circle.

The third quarter featured plenty of wind and errors by both sides but it was Penola’s patience and movement that kept the Eagles just ahead.

Accurate shooting from Kingston’s Chloe Pink and Emilie Schaefer in the last quarter allowed them to outscore Penola, however the Eagles held on to take the win by two, 41-39.

Sophie Pearce was Penola’s best on court, while Emilie Schaefer was named best for Kingston.

Penola will have four teams in action on Saturday in the second semi finals to be played at Keith.

Penola will play Naracoorte in the B Grade, Division 2 and A Reserves matches, and will take on Keith in C Grade.

The Eagles will also be in action on Sunday in the first semi finals to be held at Kybybolite.

The 13 & Under A team will play Bordertown, while the A Grade side will take the court against Naracoorte.
