Lake talks flow

Consideration is being given by the authorities to reopen the Lake George outlet to the sea at Beachport to allow sea fish to swim up the channel.

The preliminary work has begun as the recent reading shows the water level was 0.440 AHD.

This equates to about 93 GL of water volume (or 91% capacity) in the combined upper, middle and lower lakes.

Lake George Management Committee (LGMC) chairman Lee Morgan said the data was discussed at a recent meeting.

Mr Morgan said a measured discharge to the marine environment was discussed with representatives of the South Eastern Water Conservation and Drainage Board and the South Australian Research and Development Institute.

“The proposed discharge is being actively considered that will likely replenish fish stocks,” Mr Morgan said.

Meanwhile, Councillor Richard Cassidy also presented these key points to the September monthly meeting of Wattle Range Council.

Cr Cassidy represents the council on the LGMC and he attended that meeting.

It has been several years since the Lake George outlet was opened due chiefly to low water levels in the lake.
