Councillor Kevin McGrath believes his Wattle Range Council is owed an apology by Opposition Leader David Speirs.
Speaking at the October monthly council meeting in Millicent, Cr McGrath said the remarks made by Mr Speirs at a recent community forum in Mount Gambier were “obnoxious”.
A forum participant from Penola had strongly criticised the proposed $9.2m council office for Millicent.
In reply, Mr Speirs had expressed surprise the council was considering spending so much of its rate revenue on such a project and indicated he would keep a watch on the “shenanigans in Millicent”.
Cr McGrath took exception to these remarks.
“He must have said them as they were reported in The SE Voice,” Cr McGrath said.
Cr Moira Neagle was also unimpressed and quoted a dictionary meaning of “shenanigans”.
Mayor Des Noll said he would check the context of the remarks, make other investigations and reply to Mr Speirs.
