Limestone Coast residents will have a chance to speak direct to the Liberal Party with the first Shadow Country Cabinet to be held in Naracoorte this week.
State Opposition Leader David Speirs said engagement with regional South Australia had been a key priority since he became Liberal Party leader.
“It’s a big reason why I appointed Member for MacKillop Nick McBride as our Shadow Assistant Minister for Regional Engagement,” he said.
“We want our visits to be meaningful and genuine, eschewing Labor’s FIFO approach to regional visits and city-centric decision making.
“We saw a prime example of this with the recent plebiscite into merging Grant District Council and the City of Mount Gambier.
“Without consulting with these communities Peter Malinauskas announced a thought bubble to grab a headline in metropolitan media.”
Mr Speirs said, in contrast, he and Shadow Ministers Sam Telfer and Nicola Centofanti listened to the impacted communities who raised concerns.
“We took these concerns to Parliament but unfortunately the government did not listen,” he said.
“Not surprisingly the plebiscite was comprehensively rejected.
“The Liberal Party I lead will not make these mistakes and during this upcoming trip I will spend three nights in the South East visiting a range of regional towns.”
Mr Speirs said it would be his third visit to Mount Gambier since taking on the leadership.
“In just over six months I have personally visited 50 different regional towns and during this visit I will add Kingston, Robe, Southend, Penola and Coonawarra to the list,” he said.
“This time I cannot wait to bring my entire Shadow Cabinet with me to make sure we are hearing directly from your community.”
Shadow Country Cabinet will be held at the Naracoorte Showgrounds on Thursday at 7pm.
