Life sentence received

Ahomeless Millicent man who bashed a man to death in Mount Gambier has been sentenced.

Paul Roomes, 67, was sentenced to life in prison with a non-parole period of 20 years in the Supreme Court of South Australia by Justice Sandi McDonald on Monday.

Roomes killed 65-year-old Peter Smith in a violent attack at a block of units Bond Street in Mount Gambier on September 26, 2023.

The court heard Mr Smith died from repeated head injuries sustained from an ongoing beating with evidence linking a glass ashtray and the leg of a broken coffee table to the murder.

Roomes also tore off one of Mr Smith’s ears during the attack.
